Loan Repayment Calculator Flowchart
A decision tree, useful for determining your next steps in paying off student loans.

Primer: Using the Optimizer wisely

  1. Emergency fund first. Target 3–6 months. Keep minimum loan payments while you build it.

  2. Capture your employer match. It’s a near‑risk‑free return. Contribute enough to get the full match.

  3. High‑interest non‑student debt beats everything. If you have it, pay that before extra on student loans.

  4. Forgiveness? If eligible for PSLF/IDR forgiveness, avoid prepayments that could forfeit benefits. Keep documentation.

  5. Compare rates. If your loan APR exceeds expected after‑tax investment return by your buffer, favor prepaying. Otherwise, investing may win; if close, splitting is reasonable.

  6. Re‑check yearly or when rates/income change.
